Núñez: "I can be a valuable asset when it comes to helping the younger players develop"
The new signing is presented at the RCDE Stadium
Unai Núñez had his official presentation as the latest RCD Espanyol summer signing this Wednesday, and used the opportunity to give his thoughts on the upcoming campaign.
“Given my experience, I can be a valuable asset when it comes to helping the younger players develop, but also helping the rest of my teammates achieve our goals,” he told journalists.
“Coming to a club like Espanyol, a city like Barcelona, and a beautiful stadium, after receiving the call from someone like Monchi, makes me even more excited to come. We reached an agreement very quickly because both sides worked hard to make it happen.”
He emphasised that he felt very welcomed by the dressing room upon arrival, and commented that “I believe I can contribute much more to help the team.”
When questioned about the option to buy included in his loan deal, he responded by saying “That means I have to do my best to convince them to take up the option. But all of that is looking at the long term, so we'll take things one day at a time.”
“Last season, both in Italy and at Valencia, I played practically every game. What I hope is that we keep winning matches and picking up points, and see the team improve and compete to be at the top of the table.”
He also acknowledged that he shares the idea of loyalty and commitment of the Espanyol fans and that he likes the word “solidity” to describe himself “because I often use it in conversations with my father. I want to be competent in order to avoid mistakes, to always be well-positioned, and to be able to help my teammates.”
Finally, Monchi stated that Núñez’ willingness to come facilitated the quick completion of the deal.
“With Unai, we were looking for security at the back and quick adaptation. because he is a player with over 200 appearances in the top flight. He was a safe bet.”
